RIP, Whitney

Yahoo News

Whitney Houston, she of the legendary voice, gave her final curtain call. She was 48. I always thought it would be spousal abuse that would do her in, but it seems she lost her long battle with drugs. Such a sad waste of superb talent.

In my jaded youth, I saw her perform early in her career. Her voice was amazing (and she most definitely was not lip synching; she screwed up a lyric), but she stood absolutely still on stage, frozen–if not glued to the spot. I thought it was strange, she had so much talent and that she had so little confidence.

Thanks for the songs. You will be missed.

Update: Esquire has a first-hand (and thus very biased) account from one of her life-long friends. Interesting reading, tho.

May her soul rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon her! She was a great talent.

an incredible voice and at her peak – beauty that shone
but her demons just took over
mayt she find the peace she never had in the past 20 years

  3. Reamus:

What an incredible shame…I hope the demons now leave her in peace…I will never forget that voice.

  4. Pissed in NYC:

Beauty and real talent in one person. What a shame.

Yeah, Pissed, it breaks my heart in a funny way. I guess it’s the potential that died, too. I mean Billie Holliday also had a drug problem that ultimately killed her, too, but she also had a long career. Maybe I’m too selfish in that I want more, but I suspect it is more shock that people with such immense and raw talent are just as weak as he rest of us.

I dunno, I’m just shaking my head and wondering why?

Her obit was written and filed well in advance. Her death is tragic, but not surprising.
The proximate cause of her death, like those of all the “died too young” who paved her way,
lies in our bizarre notions of value and worth.

An exceptional talent is never enough to complete a life. The next tragedy is always in the wings, waiting for the opportunity to be exploited and used up, thinking they’ll be different. Funny, I’ve not heard a peep about that aspect.

Mike_FTW: Y’all know there are plenty of crack addicts still alive that could use all this love and support, right?

  8. Dimitrios:

Maybe we should have made it sex, hugs and rock and roll.

    RIP Whitney Houston
