1960s Culture War (again)

It comes to our attention that we give Ron Paul the short-end of the short stick around here, and so, my fellow incorrigible spitballers, to make up for that oversight, here he is, the good doctor, last night defending The Pill:

But sort of along the line of the pills creating immorality, I don’t see it that way. I think the immorality creates the problem of wanting to use the pills. So you don’t blame the pills. I think it’s sort of like the argument — conservatives use the argument all the time about guns. Guns don’t kill, criminals kill. So, in a way, it’s the morality of society that we have to deal with. The pill is there and, you know, it contributes, maybe, but the pills can’t be blamed for the immorality of our society.

–Ron Paul

So there you have it. Guns don’t kill babies, sluts kill babies. Don’t blame the gun/Pill, blame the criminal/slut.

So, for those of you progressives who think that Goldbug’s sensible position on wars (and it is very sensible) makes him a viable alternative to President Carebear, think again.

Libertarian my pretty pink ass.

From this quote I don’t see where Paul is advocating a ban on the Pill. He might not be a fan of its use. There’s been a lot on the Internet recently about how beneficial the pill has been for women’s health, and not just as a contraceptive.

I wouldn’t vote for him or his idiot son, but contraception is safer with him than with Santorum, Romney or Gingrich.

    Loonatarian.

Sorry, but that just doesn’t follow.

If anything, standard issue republicans like Romney and Gingrich know that they can mouth the culture war issues on the stump. but when they’ve managed to buy an office, the corporate masters do not care enough to waste political capital on it. They’ve had forty years to overturn Roe, and it is still in play; these things are worth more to rile up the barking yobs.

RP, though, is a barking loon and will go ahead and chase after any shiny object that gets dangled in front of him; gold standard, drug legalization, banning contraception….

AT BEST, he will look the other way while the TeaBaggers make America into Gilead.

    I never thought that.

But his position on wars is much better than President Drone Strike’s, and I so no reason not to point this out.

“Drug legalization”.. “a shiny object”, pleeeease, we’ve got a drug war that is a complete total failure and always has been. The criminalization of marijuana is one of the biggest reasons this country has the greatest prison population per capita than any other in the world. I would equate drug legalization with same sex marriage, it has got to come or we don’t deserve to survive.

  6. Tengrain:

Knowdoubt – I fully agree with you, and I lay the blame for the Drug Wars right at Nancy Reagan’s feet; her rehab from her silly scandals of borrowed couture and expensive china has wrecked this country in too many ways to Sunday.

Thunder – I agree with you, too. The drone strikes is just about the most un-American thing I can think of. Each time the news tells me about another one, I cringe a little more.

Zombie – But that’s the whole point of the Culture Wars: get the mouthbreathers excited so that they will come out to vote and be screwed again for four years.

Bruce388 – Maybe I didn’t phrase it right. I don’t think Goldbug wants to ban the pill, but he sure wants to pander to the Xristian Xrazies.

There’s money in The Pill for Big Pharma, so of course glibertarians have no problem with it. They also have no problem with Big Pharma killing you with all manner of shoddy drugs because “G’uh, let the free market sort it out. John Galt forever!” bullshit.

As a former obstetrician-gynecologist, Dr. Paul must be aware that when reproduction was left entirely in the hands of God, the percentage of infants who survived their first year was about 25% and that giving birth frequently took the mother’s life.

Science got involved with human reproduction because God appears to be a low achiever. And low achievement appears to be what the GOP-Tea Patriots worship.
