    Several science fiction luminaries (Sam Moscowitz and Theodore Sturgeon that I can recall) from the 1940-1950′s claim Hubbard announced publicly that no one could get rich at a quarter of a cent a word. The only way to get rich in America was to invent a new religion.

    The story may be apocryphal, but I wouldn’t bet money on it.
