Bummernacht

Expect Miracles!

The Festival of Zappadan starts tonight with the annual Bummernacht (literally, Bummer Night), the day that Frank Zappa “went on his final tour” in 1993.

For those of you who need a refresher on Frank Zappa:

I see Jimmy Carl there, the only other Mother of Invention who has left this mortal coil. Can’t believe it’s been 19 yrs. already.

I met Jimmy Black in Austin in the early-mid 90s, he was a contract painter and I was working for Kelly Moore Paints. He moonlighted with his band “The Grandmothers”, who I saw many times around Austin. He was a wonderful, intelligent, soft-spoken dude. And it was my privilege to have known him.

I was late to the party, but posted my first (of several) Frank tributes at my place.

What a genius, and what a loss to those of us left behind.

I miss him more than all the others who caught the train before me.
