The Festival of Zappadan starts tonight with the annual Bummernacht (literally, Bummer Night), the day that Frank Zappa “went on his final tour” in 1993.

I see Jimmy Carl there, the only other Mother of Invention who has left this mortal coil. Can’t believe it’s been 19 yrs. already.
I met Jimmy Black in Austin in the early-mid 90s, he was a contract painter and I was working for Kelly Moore Paints. He moonlighted with his band “The Grandmothers”, who I saw many times around Austin. He was a wonderful, intelligent, soft-spoken dude. And it was my privilege to have known him.
