When I was in high school (late 1960s) I heard a rumor that Gomer Pyle & Rock Hudson were an item. I guess high school gossip was right on both accounts way back then.

About the Jim Nabors article- the very few haters that have shown up are getting slammed! When I was a little kid, our next door neighbor, and the receptionist at our dentist’s office, was a grand old southern belle who was Jim’s kindergarten teacher. Having always loved Jim’s work, we were tickled pink that she knew this famous, funny guy.
I’m glad for him and for his partner, but part of me thinks that he could have had a H-U-G-E impact on the culture if he had come out earlier. Here he was, a genuinely beloved public figure, and a son of the south… ahhh, who am I kidding? The poor guy probably faced enormous pressures while growing up, and it’s hard to jettison the baggage of centuries of acculturation. Luckily, he had the talent to escape the situation. Sadly, thousands of other kids didn’t have that ticket out.
