It seems that the A-list gays, the ones with money and influence, are leaving The Carebear’s fundraising event next week in droves ever since his DOJ released their support for DOMA over the weekend. Timing is everything, as great comics will tell you, and the timing for this DNC fundraiser (sponsored by Barney Frank, Tammy Baldwin and Jared Polis) could not happen at a better time.
Here’s the thing that the canapé crowd doesn’t get: When the whisperers and the naysayers try to appease the LGBTQ community that there is too much going on with two wars, the Great Recession, Healthcare reform, international tensions, and so forth, they need to be called on their bullshit.
Right now, this very moment, the Dims have control of the White House, and the Congress, and enough of the Senate that they can make real change. By the midterm elections, they might not have it; hell they probably won’t have it if history is any guide. There is literally no better time than the present to make real progress. It will not happen on its own, the only thing that is missing is the political willpower and leadership.
And it is a load of crap to say that there is too much on the table already. The world is not single-threaded; you can run multiple programs on your computer, and our elected officials can effect multiple challenges at the same time. Again, all that is missing is the willpower and leadership to do it.
What they are not willing to say (or put in writing) is that LGBTQ rights are not priorities. But let’s be honest for a moment: they are really saying that Human Rights are not a priority.
I do not accept that, and I don’t think anyone else should either.
Maybe we really ARE surrender monkeys? The going hasn’t even gotten tough yet.
The world is round. We’ll get there.
The Carebear, as you so charmingly call him, seems to have taken to many of ex-President Weasel’s programs: illegal wiretapping, crazed secrecy, protecting torturers, etc. Perhaps he should take up another of his predecessor’s favorite gambits: it’s law if I say it is. Just sign the foul DADT out of existence. (I know this is not how it works, but you know what I mean.)

Actually, the Carebear was named that was given by Fairlane at the late and lamented blog, Jonestown. It just seemed right so it has stuck. I actually called him Dressing-on-the-Side during the election. I thought for sure that Hillary (“Iceberg Lettuce”) was going to be the nominee, and he would be, well, on the side.
I think the president can sign executive statements saying that “Law X” is under review, and do not enforce it. I think that is especially true for DADT, because he is the Commander in Chief.

Tengrain: I’m beyond spitting mad about the DOMA brief and the crumb Obama’s team sent out today (token benefits for same-sex partners of federal employees, but not, it seems health insurance) to placate the gays. Time to withhold money, time and votes. We need a real progressive third party yesterday. God, I hate them all (except for Bernie Sanders and a few others).
Pissed – I agree. I know we both were going for third parties at the election, just keep strong.
