My Readymade Post for March 4

Yup – another fold it project. Admittedly, not everyone is going to need to make seed packets, but if you should, who’s da man? Tengrain is!

Kevin's e-z zeed packet

If you are a member of the Seed Saver’s Exchange, right about now you are receiving requests for seeds from the other members. I got my first request this week.

This presents a challenge and an opportunity: design an easy-to-fold seed packet that can both hold the seeds and protect them in the mail as they go to their new homes. Additionally, it should have a space to put any information about the seed that the gardener might need, and it would be nice to have an image of the plant.

Here’s my simple seed packet template you can down load. Click the image to see the full size.

seed packet template I generally like to put the picture on the side of the packet that will not have the flap glued over it. I think it makes a better presentation. If you have a layout tool like InDesign, you can flip the text so that it is oriented correctly once the packet is folded, but that is a nice-to-have touch; the gardener can always turn the packet around.

The image at the top of the post shows how to fold and glue it together.

This last image shows a complete template before folding.

Please remember to use heavy paper (card-stock is best) to protect the seeds. This packet fits nicely into an envelope, so you should not have any problems mailing your seeds first class.

I am embarrassed to admit I just figured out that this section was here. I always went to the pictures and did not understand the links at the top. I never even saw this section before. I am one stupid monkey! I’ll have to read all of this tomorrow. (BTW, I love origami and paper-craft as well.)

  2. Tengrain:

Always nice to have another paper-folder in our midst, Dr. Z. In addition to MPS, I also am a contributor to ReadyMade Magazine’s blog.

    Regards,

    Tengrain

Thanks so much for the great seed packet idea! I now am making the coolest Christmas “gifts” for my seed swapping buddies. I really appreciate the info!
