McCain supporter turns away children of Obama supporters during trick-or-treat

Published: Saturday November 1, 2008

A Metro-Detroit Michigan woman refused to give candy on Halloween to children of Barack Obama supporters.

Shirley Nagel of Grosse Pointe Farms gave out treats Friday evening, but only to those who share her support of John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin.

Fox 2 News reports a sign posted outside Nagel’s house, about 12 miles west of Detroit, served notice to all trick-or-treaters. It read: “No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters.”

Nagel told a Fox 2 reporter that “Obama’s scary.” When asked about children who’d been turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: “Oh well. Everybody has a choice.”

The following video is the Halloween night report live from the home of the McCain supporter who turned away sad, crying children and toddlers.

Obama supporters, Gerald and Angie Skaggs, stand outside their home in Ansted, W.Va., Friday, Oct. 17, 2008. Fed up with a lousy economy and Republican leadership, many voters here — and, presumably, elsewhere in America — may re-embrace their blue-collar and historically Democratic roots, swallow any misgivings about race and support a black man for president.

No offense, but when older white Americans in trailer parks have signs like this outside their homes and are willing to put their photos and names on the internet, it is well past time for Mc$hame’s campaign to start worrying.

Here’s a clue:

McCain Hiring Field Organizers Who Support Obama

Two women walk out of John McCain’s Mid-West headquarters carrying a pile of voter canvassing sheets, one sports a baseball hat declaring her a “team leader” of the Republican campaign. And both are black — an unusual sight in an election where Barack Obama’s support among African Americans is almost monolithic.

Are they volunteers? They look at each other sheepishly. “Not exactly,” replies one. “We work for an employment agency,” says the other. Who are they voting for? “I don’t want to say,” says the first woman. “Obama — of course!” whispers the braver of the pair.

McCain casts himself as middle-class guardian (AP)

TOLEDO, Ohio – Evoking “Joe the Plumber” near his hometown in this pivotal state, Republican John McCain on Sunday cast himself as the guardian of middle-class workers and small-business owners who fuel the economy.

“If I’m elected president, I won’t raise taxes on small businesses, as Sen. (Barack) Obama proposes, and force them to cut jobs,” McCain said of his Democratic opponent during a rally at the convention center. “I will keep small business taxes where they are, help them keep their costs low and let them spend their earnings to create more jobs, not send to Washington.”

McCain flew to Toledo, near where “Joe the Plumber” Wurzelbacher lives, from the state capital of Columbus amid the GOP’s push for this swing state and its 20 electoral votes.

The Holland, Ohio, plumber was in New York making the media rounds with his family, but McCain has been evoking his spirit after making him the focal point the final presidential debate between McCain and Obama. McCain also mentions Wurzelbacher at his rallies after the plumber was videotaped questioning Obama about whether his tax plan would keep him from buying the two-man plumbing shop where he works.

While some analyses showed Wurzelbacher faring better under Obama’s plan than McCain’s, McCain has lashed out at Obama for saying that while his policies may force some to pay higher taxes, they were designed to “spread the wealth around” by targeting only families making over $250,000 annually.

Sen. Obama is more interested in controlling who gets your piece of the pie than he is growing the pie,” McCain told a crowd of several thousand.

During an earlier rally at Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio, McCain drew cheers when he proclaimed that he was campaigning “on behalf of Joe the Plumber and Rose the Teacher and Phil the Bricklayer and Wendy the Waitress.”

Statesman’s Obama Editorial Focuses on Facts, Not Hype

Among the major Texas newspapers to have issued endorsements for President, the Austin American-Statesman has, to date, done the best job restricting their endorsement to facts, not hype.

Their endorsement walks through key issues for voters — politics, taxes, diplomacy, energy, tax cuts, and the candidates’ respective character — with clear arguments and a clearly stated opinion. It doesn’t read like one of their editorial staffers is a thesaurus. The Statesman’s editorial is cogent and concise. Its straight-forward language allows it to make, in my opinion, one of the best arguments for an Obama presidency.

Barack Obama, Joe the Plumber
Joe Wurzelbacher spoke to Senator Barack Obama about taxes while the candidate campaigned near Toledo, Ohio, last week.
(Photo: Jim Young/Reuters)

Joe the Plumber is not a licensed plumber? Is he still a Repiglican tool?

Yes.

From the New York Times Caucus Blog:

Turns out that “Joe the Plumber,” as he became nationally known when Senator John McCain made him a theme at Wednesday night’s third and final presidential debate, may run a plumbing business but he is not a licensed plumber. His full name is Samuel J. Wurzelbacher. And he owes a bit in back taxes.

The premise of his question to Mr. Obama about taxes may also be flawed, according to tax analysts.

An official at Local 50 of the plumber’s union, based in Toledo, said Mr. Wurzelbacher does not hold a license. He also has never served an apprenticeship and does not belong to the union. (The national plumber’s union, the United Association of Plumbers, Steamfitters, and Service Mechanics, endorsed Mr. Obama, it should be noted.)

…..

Unlike some other states, Ohio does not have a formal statewide licensing system for plumbers. But the city of Toledo and other municipalities do, Mr. Joseph said, and Mr. Wurzelbacher has not met those requirements.

“All contractors are licensed, and he does not have a license, either as a contractor or a plumber,” the union official said, citing a search of government records. “I can’t find that he’s ever even applied for any kind of apprenticeship, and he has never belonged to local 189 in Columbus, which is what he claims on his Facebook page.”

According to public records, Mr. Wurzelbacher has been subject to two liens, each over $1,000, one of which — a personal tax lien — is still outstanding.

McCain seeks special ‘fair use’ copyright rules for VIPs

CNET News by Chris Soghoian

John McCain’s Presidential campaign has discovered the remix-unfriendly aspects of American copyright law, after several of the candidate’s campaign videos were pulled from YouTube. McCain has now discovered the rights holder friendly nature of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which forces remixers to fight an uphill battle to prove that their work is a ‘fair use.’ However, instead of calling for an overhaul of the much hated law, McCain is calling for VIP treatment for the remixes made by political campaigns.

McCain’s proposal: Complaints about videos uploaded by a political campaign would be manually reviewed by a human YouTube employee before any possible removal of the remix. The process for complaints against videos uploaded by millions of other Americans would stay the same: instant removal by a computer program, and then possible reinstatement a week or two later after the video sharing site has received and manually processed a formal counter-notice.

With 11 homes, 13 cars, it’s not terribly surprising that McCain is calling for special treatment for the YouTube videos of politicians. As for the ‘fair use’ claims of the poor starving masses: Let them eat cake.

On Tuesday, the McCain campaign sent a formal letter to YouTube asking for this two-tier system for ‘fair use’ complaints. Copyright-guru Larry Lessig called it a “fantastic letter“, adding “bravo to the campaign” in a post to his blog. Since then, the technology press has been pretty supportive, although the focus of the coverage seems to mainly be along the lines of “McCain realizes that fair use claims are uphill battle”. This is the wrong message to send, and as much as I respect Professor Lessig, I have to call him out here. He is wrong. McCain should be criticized for his attempt to get special treatment, and Google/YouTube need to treat all users the same way.

All claims of fair use are equal — yet some claims are more equal than others.

The only way we will get an effective overhaul of copyright laws will be by forcing politicians to suffer along with the masses. The minute a special set of rules are made for those in Congress, the incentive to fix the system will disappear. To drive this point home, consider the following:

During the confirmation hearings for Judge Robert Bork, the Washington DC City Paper obtained a copy of the Republican nominee’s video rental records. Alarmed at the possibility that their own rental histories would be revealed by the press, Congress jumped to pass comprehensive privacy legislation for the video rental records of all Americans. Up until the Bork fiasco, there had been no real incentive to fix anything, but once the risk to their own records was made clear, Congress acted. As a result, we are now all protected by the 1988 Video Privacy Protection Act.

Compare this to the horrible situation at airports. Americans are routinely harassed, prodded, poked and humiliated by employees of the Transportation Security Administration. While we stand in line like sheep, Congressmen get to skip through the security lines, avoiding the entire process. Given the fact that they don’t have to suffer at the hands of TSA, it’s not terribly surprising that they have little incentive to fix the problems faced by the rest of us.

These two examples should make it clear — we cannot allow politicians to receive special treatment in copyright and fair use disputes. If anything, campaign videos should receive sub-standard treatment. McCain’s videos deserve to rot in purgatory at the back of the DMCA queue, behind videos of toddlers, skateboarding dogs, Starwars Kid remixes, and the hundreds of clips of the dramatic chipmunk. Perhaps then, the Senator will throw his weight behind comprehensive copyright reform that’ll result in real benefits for the rest of the remix-population.

A little political humor…

A teacher in Elmira, New York, who is a McCain supporter, asked her 4th grade class, ‘How many of you are McCain fans?’ Not really knowing what a McCain fan is, but wanting to be liked by the teacher, all the kids raised their hands, except for Little Johnny Cohen.

The teacher asked Little Johnny why he has decided to be different. Little Johnny said, ‘Because I’m not a McCain fan.’ The teacher asked, ‘Why aren’t you a McCain fan?’ Johnny said, ‘Because I’m a Democrat.’

The teacher asked him why he’s a Democrat. Little Johnny answered, ‘Well, my Mom’s a Democrat and my Dad’s a Democrat, so I’m a Democrat.’

Annoyed by this answer, the teacher asked, ‘If your mom was a moron and your dad was an idiot, what would that make you?’

With a big smile, Little Johnny replied, ‘That would make me a McCain fan.’
